Marius and Éponine

Les Misérables

Marius and Éponine are bound by a love that Marius does not return and Éponine never confesses. Her devotion nevertheless shapes his fate: she helps him find Cosette, the woman he loves, and sacrifices herself for his happiness. Their relationship also draws Marius into the hidden criminal plot surrounding Jean Valjean and Thénardier, linking private longing to the novel’s converging intrigues.

Unequal Attachment

Éponine is the daughter of the Jondrette family, Marius’s neighbors. Though she loves him, she keeps that love from him. The relationship is therefore marked by a sharp difference in what each knows and feels: Marius pursues the woman he loves, while Éponine’s own attachment remains unspoken.

Help in Marius’s Search

Éponine helps Marius find Cosette. Her assistance advances his pursuit of the person he loves, even though the evidence presents Éponine herself as secretly in love with him. In the account of their relationship, her care takes the form not of asking Marius to choose her, but of helping him reach someone else.

Sacrifice and Converging Intrigues

Éponine’s sacrifice has two parts: she gives up the prospect of being loved by Marius and dies in his place. Her role is thus essential to his fate, not merely an expression of unspoken feeling. The Jondrette family’s criminal plot also brings Marius into contact with Jean Valjean, whom the family targets under the name M. Leblanc. Marius witnesses the trap, while the reader and Marius eventually discover that Jondrette is Thénardier, the former soldier Marius has been seeking to thank for saving his father. He is left facing a conflict between helping Cosette’s supposed father and refusing to denounce the man he believes saved his own. Éponine’s devotion and the family’s criminal activity thus meet within the same web of divided loyalties.
